I'd also recommend The Cold War Swap. Fools is Thomas's darkest novel, but it is very good. All his works tend to the cynical but he handles it in a wry, ironic way so you don't necessarily get the feeling of having it shoved in your face. Still, he definitely was a talented writer.<br /><br />You may want to try Ross Thomas whose espionage novels like The Cold War Swap are fairly cynical. He also wrote the smoothest prose.
