Sure, the muse is going to take you where it will, but I ain't following.

The think is, I don't automatically hate Dark Lords, it just has to be done right and well, neither of which usually happens. I'm curious what it will be like to reread the Fionavar Tapestry (I read them ten years ago and liked them). I think he wrote them in first flush of having helped create The Silmarillion.

I read Lord Foul a few years ago and liked it very much. On my current reread it's holding up very well, though after writing reviews for several years I'm looking for (and seeing) the joins a little more clearly. The Wasphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08636805818054637966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7008217764991774516.post-73640254138630842112015-10-23T11:42:48.890-04:002015-10-23T11:42:48.890-04:00I'm only commenting on the show, but if the &q...I'm only commenting on the show, but if the "real" middle ages was like GoT, could it have produced Thomas Aquinas, da Vinci, or Chaucer? I find the default cynicism of so many books lazy as well as inaccurate. I got ...Great article and I totally agree with you. I got tired of all the dark lord stuff, the long waits between books, and the never-ending sagas. I remember when Moorcock's 2 Corum Trilogies were first published: both time, I had only to wait 1 month between each book. I'm a huge fan of Guy Gavriel Kay, and one reason is the high level of intelligence and literary quality he brings to the table. No dark lords or wizards, and sometimes hardly any magic. Just human drama and adventure: with the exception of The Fionavar Tapestry, his boks are more alternate-world history than Tolkienesque fantasy, but they do, in my opinion, qualify as epic, and they are certainly of heroic proportions.

Looking forward to your thoughts on Thomas Covenant.Joe Bonadonnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08053954733485203286noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7008217764991774516.post-2209469612536887922015-10-23T05:01:53.792-04:002015-10-23T05:01:53.792-04:00This: but to posit, as some authors seem to be doi...This: but to posit, as some authors seem to be doing, that the whole world is really only gray, strikes me as simpleminded.
